JUNIORS
Our Junior footballers qualified for the City Final following a high scoring encounter against Na Piarsaigh in Rathbane on Wednesday last. A feature of the game was the point taking ability of Crecora-Manister side against the goal threat of the more physical NaP side. This was evident right throughout the first half, while despite dominating possession, we only held a four point advantage approaching half time. The key score of the half came just on half-time when the excellent Conor Burke, volleyed to the net following a breaking ball at the edge of the square. This left us with a seven point advantage on the scoreline 1 – 12 to 2 – 2. With the aid of the breeze in the second half, NaP kept the game very competitive and added some fine scores from play. A Darach Skelly goal and further points by C.Burke, Michael O’Neill & Mike McCormack ensured that the gap remained in our favour and we ran out winners 2 – 17 to 3 – 6.
Despite a long lay-off between matches this was a very solid team performance. We had an excellent save by Shane O’Connell in the first half, resolute defensive work by all six backs including Cathal Monaghan & John Buckley when introduced and midfield dominance with M.O’Neill & D.Macken. The forward line was a constant threat lead by C.Burke, Gary O’Connell and M. McCormack. Next up will be the City Final and also progression to the county quarter final.
Panel on the night: Shane O’Connell, Evan Moloney, Tim Moloney, Shane Moloney, Cathal Scully, Cormac Flanagan, Peter Power, David Macken(0 – 1), Micheál O’Neill (0 – 4), Gary O’Connell (0 – 2),Conor Burke (1 – 7), Damien Kearney (0 – 1), Rob Henehan, Mike McCormack(0 – 1),Darragh Skelly(1 – 1), Niall Moloney, Mark Shanahan, Cathal Monaghan, John Buckley, Liam Quirke.
MINORS
Our minor hurlers await a playoff match against Croom which is due to take place next Friday 9th September. Time and venue still to be confirmed.
UNDER 16
Our under 16s had a fine win last Wednesday over Granagh-Ballingarry by a single point 2-13 to 1-15. They play their last game now next Wednesday 7th September against Killacolla Gaels at 6.30pm in Crecora. Your support would be greatly appreciated.
UNDER 14
Our under 14 hurlers gave a fine account of themselves in the division 1 shield semi final but were eventually beaten by a strong Doon team by 2-14 to 1-10. Our under 14s were very competitive this year, the highlights being big wins over Na Piarsaigh and Patrickswell. These lads have great potential and will develop further I’m sure as they go up the age groups. Focus switches now to our footballers who play in the division 1 semi final against Newcastlewest next Saturday 10th September at 2pm in Mick Neville Park Rathkeale. Please come out and support the lads.
