Tory Gaels, the amalgamation of Crecora Manister and Croom, had a hard-fought win over Mungret in the U21A City Football final on Saturday 3rd December. Playing with the elements in the first half, Tory Gaels lead from the start with scores from Gary O’Connell and Conor Burke. Several scoring opportunities went a begging for the Gaels and Mungret grew in confidence and kept in contact with two scores from play and were denied a goal by an excellent save by Shane O Connell. An opportunistic Mark Kelly goal on the 20th minute and another point from man of the match Gary O’Connell left the halftime time of 1 – 4 to 0 – 3.
The introduction at half time of Micheál O’Neill and Damian Kearney livened up the Gaels attack and despite a number of well taken points by Mungret, Tory Gaels remained in control. The key score of the half came when Damian Kearney punched home a ball that dropped precariously into the square. Further scores by Conor Burke and Dean Shinners gave a final score of Tory Gaels 2 – 9 to Mungret’s 0 – 9.
On accepting the Cup from Seán Burke, captain Cormac Flanagan acknowledged the referee, Ballybrown GAA for their pitch, the players and coaches of Tory Gaels and a sporting Mungret side.
Both sides now progress to the county competition with Tory Gaels scheduled to play Athea/Mountcollins Rangers in the “A” semi-final at Mick Neville Park Rathkeale at 12 noon on Sunday 11th December.
