Club Notes10th October

Intermediate Football
Our intermediate footballers take on Monaleen in a relegation final has been fixed for Saturday 16th October in Claughaun at 4.30pm.

Junior A Hurling
Our junior A hurlers bowed out of the championship last Saturday after a 1-21 to 1-16 defeat to Caherline last Saturday.
Darach Skelly got the opening score of the game for us with a fine score from play after Caherline had initially opened the scoring.
This do or die affair was always going to be tight and it transpired that way as the sides exchanged points early on with Cathal O’Neill scoring two frees for us.
Caherline gradually got the upper hand and went in at the water break two points in front 0-5 to 0-3.
Caherline got the first score of the second quarter but an outstanding goal from Conor Kirby brought us back level and this turned the momentum in our favour.
We went on to score four of the next five points with an Edwin Wixted effort from the sideline and two Cathal points from play and two frees as Rory Hannan, Evan Moloney and Jack Dalton held firm in defence.
The Caherconlish men managed to pull two points back before the whistle to leave the score at half time 1-8 to 0-10.
The east Limerick men came out firing at the start of the second half and two quickfire points saw them take the lead. We replied with some fine efforts from Cathal and Edwin but Caherline went on to extend their lead out to three points by the time the second water break came around 0-19 to 1-13.
As we brought the lead back to two points we were hit with what proved to be the killer score for Caherline as a loose ball in the square was kicked to the net and suddenly the lead was out to five points 1-19 to 1-14.
Two pointed frees and a score from play from Cathal brought the gap back to two points but as Caherline retreated in the closing stages we couldn’t get the required scores as Caherline scored the last two points to leave it 1-21 to 1-16 at the final whistle.

The palpable disappointment at the final whistle was a stark contrast from the excitement of last week’s victory but such is sport as the hurling season concludes for 2021.
Michael Batemen who moved to Canada during the week was a big loss for our lads but as the panel is young, there is plenty hope for this group to go on and win a junior title in the coming years.
Best of luck to Caherline and Ballybricken who now progress to the quarter finals from this group. The club would like to thank the management team of John Tuohy, Paddy O’Neill, Tim Egan and Noel Kennedy and all players for their work and commitment throughout the year.

Team: Ger Kennedy; Evan Moloney, Jack Dalton, Rory Hannan; Cian Leahy, Richard Murphy, Tim Moloney; Cormac Flanagan, Paraic O’Neill; Cathal O’Neill (0-13), Darach Skelly (0-1), Karl Moloney; Donnacha Connolly, Edwin Wixted (0-2), Conor Kirby (1-0). Used subs: Brendan Power for Donnacha Connolly, Tom Shanahan for Cian Leahy, Tomas Connolly for Darach Skelly, Padraig Byrnes for Tim Moloney, Ciaran Haigney. Other subs: Chris Shanahan, Colm Carey, Sean Keyes, Liam Quirke, Dom O’Connor, Ciaran Humphreys, Shane O’Connor, Micheál O’Neill (inj), Niall Moloney (inj).

Intermediate Football
Our intermediate footballer’s relegation final with Monaleen has been fixed for Saturday 16th October in Claughaun at 4.30pm.

Junior A Hurling
Our junior A hurlers recorded a vital 2-15 to 2-13 win over neighbours Ballybricken-Bohermore last Saturday afternoon in Fedamore in the most dramatic of circumstances.
We had a dream start inside the opening minute of the game when Edwin Wixted struck for a goal with Conor Kirby following up with a fine point from play.
Ballybricken to their credit replied with three points of their own before a goal for the men in purple and gold left it 1-3 to 1-1 in their favour.
We went point for point with them until the waterbreak with Cathal O’Neill chipping in with two pointed frees for us to leave it 1-6 to 1-3.
The second quarter was a tense affair as we gradually ate into Ballybricken’s lead with three more Cathal O’Neill frees leaving the minimum in it at the break, 1-7 to 1-6. We were then dealt a sucker punch at the start of the second half as Ballybricken struck for a soft goal to put four points between the teams.
Our lads did not panic however and showed great resilience to claw our way back into the contest as Evan Moloney, Paraic O’Neill and Richard Murphy started dominating their defensive battles and Karl Moloney and Cormac Flanagan got on top in midfield.
Three more frees from Cathal and an inspirational score from corner back Rory Hannan from the middle of the field as well as a fine point from play from Cathal left the minimum in it once more at the second half water break.
Despite our best efforts and some fine points from play from Cathal, Ballybricken always managed to keep 2 or 3 points in it as it looked as if they would take the two points back to Caherelly.
As the game entered injury time Ballybricken held a three point lead before a Cathal O’Neill score brought it back to a two point game.
In the dying moments, Michael Bateman made a darting run down the right wing and his shot was missed by the Ballybricken full back and goalkeeper before eventually finding its way into the net to give us the lead.
We managed to turn over the resultant puckout which Brendan Power finished over the bar.
The referee blew the final whistle shortly after which marked jubilant scenes from our supporters and sideline.
Team: Ger Kennedy; Evan Moloney, Jack Dalton, Rory Hannan (0-1); Páraic O’Neill, Richard Murphy, Tim Moloney; Cormac Flanagan, Karl Moloney; Cathal O’Neill (0-12, 0-8f), Michael Bateman (1-0), Darach Skelly; Micheál O’Neill, Edwin Wixted (1-0), Conor Kirby (0-1). Used subs: Brendan Power (0-1) for Micheál O’Neill. Other subs: Donncha Connolly, Tom Shanahan, Chris Shanahan, Colm Carey, Padraig Byrnes, Sean Keyes, Liam Quirke, Dom O’Connor, Damien Kearney, Ciaran Humphreys, Ciaran Heagney, Shane O’Connor, Cian Leahy (inj), Niall Moloney (inj).
