Club Notes 15th November 2021

Under 21 Hurlers
Our under 21 hurlers bowed out of the county A championship after a battling display that saw them come up just short against Cappamore last Sunday 14th November on a scoreline of 0-17 to 0-16, having been beaten by Killacolla Gaels in our final group game during the week.
We got off to a slow start in this quarter final tie as Cappamore came roaring out of the blocks and raced into a 0-7 to 0-2 lead by the first half water break, Cathal O’Neill with our two scores. Cappamore had extended this lead out to 0-9 to 0-2 by 20 minutes with two more well taken scores. Our lads rallied before half time and some more Cathal O’Neill frees had the half time scoreline at 0-11 to 0-6, but we suffered a setback when our captain Padraig Byrnes had to leave the fray through injury.
We gradually gained more of a foothold in the second half as we began to eat into the Cappamore lead. Our half back line of Tom Shanahan, Richard Murphy and Rory Hannan were very dominant and created a platform for our forwards.
Donnacha Connolly, Darragh Godfrey and Rian O’Byrne were working hard and drawing frees when they ran at the Cappamore defence.
The gap was three points at the second half waterbreak and we had whittled it down to one approaching thirty minutes of play.
There was surprise at the full time whistle that no injury time was played and unfortunately for our lads we fell on the wrong side of a 0-17 to 0-16 scoreline.
Hard luck to the team and management whose second half performance in particular gives great hope for the future as many of this team are underage again next year.
Team: Ben Garry (Liberties); Alex Keyes (Liberties), Jack Dalton, Pádraig Byrnes (C); Rory Hannan, Richard Murphy, Tom Shanahan; Cathal O’Neill, Patrick O’Donnell (Liberties); Chris Shanahan, Rian O’Byrne, Shane O’Connor; Donnacha Connolly, Darragh Godfrey (Liberties), Conor McNamara (Liberties).
Subs: Ciaran Humphreys, Stephen Noonan (Liberties), Ben O’Donoghue (Liberties), Fergal Egan, Stephen Willis (Liberties), Sean Lavan, Conor Hannan, Ryan Godfrey (Liberties).
Thanks to the management team of Ger Hickey, Ger Dillon, Gerry McDermott, Paddy O’Neill, John Power and Cronan Garry (Liberties) for their commitment and dedication.

Winter Hurling Academy
The Winter Hurling Academy continues every Sunday for the next four Sundays before a break for Christmas. Thank you to all coaches and players who are making it a great success.

Best Of Luck
Best of luck to Oisin O’Byrne and all his Ard Scoil Ris team mates who play in the Dean Ryan Cup Final this Wednesday 17th November vs St. Flannan’s, Ennis.
Well done to his brother Rian who was on the scoresheet for the Ardscoil Harty Cup hurlers in their first round win over Nenagh CBS which has seen them qualify for the quarter finals in January.

The Club AGM will take place on Monday 6th December at 8.30pm in Manister Community Hall.

Under 15 Footballers
Hard luck to the under 15 footballers who lost out to St Kieran’s last Saturday in Mick Neville Park in the county final.
In this tight affair, the early exchanges were even as it stood at 0-1 apiece after ten minutes of play.
St Kierans then scored a goal and a point in quick succession to extend the lead out to four.

Despite this setback, our lads responded well to score two points before half time to leave just two points in it at half time.
Half way through the second half we had brought the sides level at 1-2 to 0-4, but St Kieran’s scored the last two points of the contest to win out by two despite the best efforts of our lads.

Hard luck to the team and management of Tom O’Keeffe and Declan Maher who had a fantastic year recording victories over big clubs such as Na Piarsaigh and Newcastlewest along the way to the final.

Intermediate Football
Our intermediates retained their status for 2022 with a 0-9 to 0-6 win over Monaleen in a tense affair in Cappamore on Saturday.
We came racing out of the blocks and were 0-5 to 0-0 up after just ten minutes as Monaleen found it difficult to deal with us going forward with Mike McCormack in particular winning great ball in the full forward line.
Richard Murphy opened the scoring with a fine free from an acute angle and this was followed by a point from play from Karl Moloney after some good build up play before an outstanding long distance score from Conor Burke.
Richard added two frees to leave the score at 0-5 to 0-0 at the first waterbreak.

Monaleen gradually started to get more of a foothold in the game and got their first score of the game shortly after the water break.
Shane O’Connell cut inside his man and was unfortunate to see his effort come off the crossbar when a goal would have put real daylight between the sides.
Monaleen went on to kick two more scores but had a man sent off on a second yellow on the stroke of half time as we led by two at the change of ends, 0-5 to 0-3.

Monaleen scored two quickfire points at the start of the second half to level the contest at 0-5 apiece.
Ten minutes into the second half we had a free from Richard Murphy to edge back into the lead.
We were unfortunate shortly after to have a goal ruled out for a square ball as Shane O’Connell fisted to the net from a Micheál O’Neill handpass, as it remained 0-6 0-5 at the second half water break.

We kicked on in the closing stages and fisted points from Micheál and Richard from play along with a free from Richard stretched the lead out to 0-9 0-5. As Monaleen were forced to chase goals our backs held firm with great defending from Evan and Tim Moloney and Sean Fitzgerald in particular. Monaleen did get a point in injury time to bring it back to a three point game but the referee’s whistle went soon afterwards as we ran out winners on a 0-9 to 0-6 scoreline.

This really was a must win game for us due to the importance of retaining our intermediate status and credit to the players for coming out the right side of this attritional affair.
Having beaten Kildimo-Pallaskenry in the group stage who now find themselves in the county final, it shows that we have the ability to beat any team in intermediate on our day and we look forward to seeing this group push on next year.

Team: Rob Sweeney; Donnacha Connolly, Tim Moloney, Evan Moloney; Mark Shanahan, Cormac Flanagan, Sean Fitzgerald; Karl Moloney (0-1), Darach Skelly; Conor Burke (0-1), Cathal O’Neill, Richard Murphy (0-6, 0-5f); Shane O’Connell, Mike McCormack, Sam Riordan. Use subs: Micheál O’Neill (0-1) for Sam Riordan, Tomás Connolly for Darach Skelly, Gary O’Connell for Shane O’Connell, Conor Kirby for Donnacha Connolly. Other subs: John McManus, Rob Greer, Cian Donohue, Killian Scanlon, Shane O’Connor, Sean Keyes, Damien Kearney, Cian Leahy (inj), David Macken (inj).

Thanks to the players and management team of Ger Riordan, Peter Healy, Tom Connolly and Mossy Fitzgerald for their dedication and commitment throughout the year.
