Club Notes 15 April 2013
Under 21 hurling:
Our U21 team, Lough Na Garra Gaels, played Bruff in the South A final on Sunday last. After an excellent start by James Malone who scored 3 points from play in the opening quarter we went in at half time 1 – 10 to 1 – 8 behind.
The diagonal wind had favoured Bruff in the first half and we had every chance at that stage, in the 2nd half our lads tried every bit as hard as they could to get back at Bruff, but each time we scored they replied with another score.
The free taking of both freetakers was excellent on the day and I don’t believe either of them missed an opportunity with Eoin Farrell having a fantastic match in open play and he was the player fouled for most for the frees he converted. Lough Nagarra had a lot of 17 year olds on the field and these young players were brilliant in the way they performed at U-21 A level and I would like to thank them for being available as I know they have a busy minor schedule also at this time of year.
These U-21 players have a great start made to their season and best of luck to the Croom players for the rest of the hurling season.
The Crecora players on this team will be a great addition to our Junior hurling panel and they will of course be key hurlers with our minor setup.
Lough Na Garra Gaels will have a rest now until the U21 football starts later in the year and I have no doubt that these players will be battling for honours in football also. We had many fine performances, in defense Colm Carey, Paudie Sheehan, Sean Vaughan and Aaron Cregan battled very hard and behind them Liam Quirke made some excellent saves, Kieran Larkin, Liam Carey and Cormac Flanagan tried all they could to get the scores that we needed but it was not to be on the day.
We lined out as follows:
Liam Quirke, Paudi Sheehan, Aaron Cregan, Bobby Reidy, John Quirke, Sean Vaughan, Dom O’Connor, Kieran Larkin, Fergal Carey, Ryan O’Shea, Eoin O’Farrell, James Malone, Colm Carey, Aaron Burke, Liam Carey, Cormac Flanagan, Cian Kirby, Darra Skelly, Cathal Quirke, Andy O’Donoghue, Garbhan Sheehan & Liam Kennedy.
Minor Hurling
Kilpeacon got their minor hurling championship off to positive start with a draw away to Cappamore on Friday the 12th. Despite the heavy underfoot conditions and non seasonal weather both sides produced a feast of great scores and the final score of 3-10 apiece was a fair outcome.
First half scores by Craig MacNamara(3), Nicky Morrissey(3), M.O’Neill and a Liam Carey goal left us trailing by two at the break. We then dominated the third quarter when C.MacNamara added another goal. The score of the game came whem M.O’Neill offloaded to the oncoming L.Carey who goaled from 13m.
At this stage it looked as if Kilpeacon had the upper hand but a late Cappamore comeback gave them them their reward. There were excellent performances throughout lead by Seán Fitzgerald, the Carey brothers, Nicky Morrissey, Tim Moloney and Craig MacNamara. Panel: Eoin Enright, Darragh Griffin,Seán Fitzgerald,David Butler,Evan Moloney,Colm Carey,Cormac Flanagan,Tim Moloney,Craig McNamara,Thomas Keogh,Liam Carey,Nicky Morrissey,Dean Fanning,Micheál O’Neill, Liam Quirke,Conor Griffin.
County Minor Football
Best of luck to the county minors footballers and especially to our own clubman Cormac Flanagan.
U-14 football
The U-14 football championship will start in May and in preparation U-14 football training resumes on Sunday evenings at 6pm at Fedamore pitch. Crecora had a strong panel of football players last year at U12 and U13 and we are looking forward to joining with Fedamore in our newly amalgamated Kilpeacon team for a successful summer for our U-14 footballers this year.
U-12 Hurling
The U-12 Hurling team got their playing season off to a good start last Thursday night when we entertained Old Christians in the Hurling League. The heavy rain which fell prior to the game made the conditions very difficult for both sets of players but the game was played in a good spirit. Our lads put in a strong performance and had a convincing win. We have also entered the U12 football league and our first outing is this Thursday (18th April) at home to Monaleen and will have regular matches on Thursday nights alternating between Hurling and Football. Hurling away to St Pats on Thursday 25th April.
