Match Reports

Intermediate Football Championship

Crecora Manister 2-12

Gerald Griffins 0-09

We came into this game, played under lights in Caherdavin on the back of 3 defeats to NCW, Galbally and St Senans. This was a must win game for our lads to have any shot of avoiding the relegation play-off’s and to put in a performance like we did just proved that we are in the right grade of football and with a bit of heart, belief and determination we deserve to be here.

Written off by the majority before the game, given the pedigree of Gerald Griffins, there was a quiet inner belief amongst the group that this game would not be a one-sided affair. Training on the previous Wednesday had the biggest attendance all year and on match day was even bigger. The support for the team on the night from both the Subs and our loyal club supporters was apparent from the off and when Rory Hannon opened the scoring in the first couple of minutes, that was a lead we never relinquished for the remainder of the game.

A free from Mark Shanahan followed up by an excellent point from Jack Dalton, playing Full Back just showed the pace and movement we were doing throughout the field. The new rules bit us a few times when the ball was placed on the ground rather than handed back to allow Gerald Griffins to stay in touch but another from Rory, a classic from Colm Parnell and then to close out the half, a two pointer from Sam Riordan put us into half time on a scoreline of 0-07 to 0-04.

While we mention all the scorers, the work done throughout the field was immense from everyone and when the Half Time whistle blew, our Subs were immediately out on the pitch kicking about, just trying to catch the eye of our selectors and management team. Everyone wanted to be playing at the start of the second half.

Cathal O’Neill opened the second half with a great score, less than a minute after a similar attempt went “slightly wide”, and was followed soon after by another Mark Shanahan free and a second from Cathal. Rory was not to be out done and again popped up to tack on another score before Gerald Griffins hit their purple patch and tacked on a few points of their own.

With about 15 left on the clock there was still 4 between the teams when David Rickard was sprung from the bench and his first possession went narrowly wide before a penalty was awarded to us for a cynical pull down in the large parallelogram which Mark superbly dispatched into the top right corner. David then soon after raised the second green flag following a great ball in from Sam and was very un-lucky soon after to get his second following the forward advantage rule where he got a 45 following a goal attempt. Gerald Griffins closed out their game with 2 more points before David put the final point on the board for Crecora Manister.

So, we go into our final group game against Pallasgreen in 2 weeks’ time with renewed hope and who knows where the end of the season will take us.
