GAA Notes Underage
It has been a busy couple of weeks across all age-groups with county playoff’s and Semi finals being contested by a number of teams.
This past week alone our U16 camogie girls were unlucky in their county final against Newcastlewest.
Our Minor football squad came out just short in their county Semi final against a very strong Ballylanders outfit and our u14 footballers and Feile representatives qualified for their final with a strong second half display against Ballyhoura Gales. They will meet Askeaton in the final in a couple of weeks.
Our U14 hurlers lost out in a thrilling Div 1 shield semi final to NAP.
Our U13 Hurlers play Newcastlewest on Wednesday evening (23rd Sept) with the winners of this match qualifying for the U13 County final.
U14 Notes
Last week was a busy week for the U14s with semi-finals in hurling and football. First up on Monday night were the hurlers who played at home to Na Piarsaigh in the Shield Semi final. Heavy rain during the day made it more difficult for hurling but both teams served up a close and exciting encounter where the result was in doubt up to the final whistle.
We were minus a few regulars but still took the game to Na Piarsaigh in the first half and held a 1 point lead at half time. It was equally tight in the second half but the game looked up for us when we fell behind by 4 points.
However, our lads showed great character as they have done all year to fight back well and equalised through a great run and point by James Conheady followed up by a brilliant goal from Sam Riordan to leave the game level with a couple of minutes to go.
Next score was vital at this stage but unfortunately we conceded a goal and Na Piarsaigh added another point in injury time to leave a final score of 2-6 to 1-5.
This was a disappointing end for a team who have been very competitive all season in the top division and played some brilliant hurling throughout the season.
The U14s then turned attention to football where they played Ballyhoura Gaels in the B county semi final on Saturday in Mick Neville park. We were again missing some regulars due to injury which may have contributed to a slow start. Ballyhoura Gaels settled earlier and were on top in the early stages. They scored a goal and only some last ditch defending and good goalkeeping by Sam Riordan kept the score down. After a few positional changes, our backs settled into the game and allowed our midfield to come more into the game.
We had points from Cathal O’Neill, Rory Hannon, Colin Coughlan and Patrick Dolphin to reduce the deficit to one point by half time, 1-4 to 0-6.
Our lads came out very strong in the second half and within 10 minutes had added 2 goals from Cathal O’Neill and Colin Coughlan.
We added on 3 points during that time with Jack Dalton also getting on the score-sheet to put us in a commanding position.
We extended out lead with some well taken points and our defense restricted Ballyhoura Gaels to 1-1 in the second half.
In the end we ran out winners on a scoreline of 2-14 to 2-5 and now progress to the final with Askeaton Ballysteen.
